In the beginning there was the Achenblog.
The beginning was on January 17, 2005 to be specific. Washington Post Writer
Joel Achenbach began blogging for the WashingtonPost.com web site, under
circumstances that remain mysterious to this day.
He wrote some darn good blogs, but something was missing.
After doing some analysis of the first few months of Achenblog readership data,
Joel and Hal (aka Hal the Schemer) met on April 6th of that year to discuss ways
of not just capturing visits to the A-blog, but to keep people interested enough
to actually read more of Joel’s stuff (aka page views). One fateful suggestion
at that meeting was to turn on the comments function.

“Now here’s the big news: We’re going to start allowing comments! Also
backtracks. Or is it trackbacks? Whatever. We’re going to allow interactivity.
[Hal, who has godlike powers over the technical side of the blog, says the
trackbacks won’t start for a few days.] We’re taking this blog out of its
1995-level format and giving it more of a 1998 feel. I guess the idea is that a
blog shouldn’t be merely my solipsistic musings, that it should include reader
reaction. I fear that’s a slippery slope. Let the rabble weigh in, the next
thing you know it’s not really my blog,”
And with that, at 3:56 PM EST on April 7th 2005, something strange and wonderful
happened. The comment function was turned on, and Achenblog readers began
leaving comments.
One year and well over 40,000 comments later, that decision has proved the
Achenblog to be an honest-to-goodness smash hit for WaPo.com and in the
Blogosphere.
Even more remarkably, it evolved into something else. Part message board, part
family, part open mike night, part fan club, part soapbox, part confessional, it
evolved into the Kit and the Kaboodle (or Boodle for short). For those that
don’t know, Joel’s blog items are the “Kits” and the comments are naturally, the
“Kaboodle”.
The Boodle started slowly, with some early Kits only garnering a few comments,
others gathering tens of comments. People began visiting the Achenblog
regularly, and began commenting on not only the Kits, but commented on other
comments (this is known as “Boodling”). While the inter-Boodler Boodling was
remarkably civil by Internet standards, it was also quite witty, well-informed
and educational, and well-considered. There were Boodler doctors, scientists,
writers and journalists, engineers, IT workers, teachers, bankers, and military
personnel. And they weren’t just located in and around Washington; Boodlers
started popping up in the 50 states, and even in other countries. Occasionally,
the Boodling was absolutely hilarious. Words were coined, poems and songs were
composed, stories were told and fiction written for each other’s amusement. At
times, it was raw with emotion and intellectual engagement; honest but
passionate disagreements and argument, enlightenment, sadness, disappointment,
outright insults, fear, and occasionally Boodlers were accused of being bad
things that end with “-ist”. People said rash things, fought, and then,
remarkably, apologized and made up. They shared heartache over human suffering
from natural disasters and war. They discussed science and religion rationally
and knowledgeably. There were Rovestorms and umbrage, hearting, LOLs and
keyboard pounding.
And oh, it was compelling, as the regular visitors built relationships with each
other and with Joel. Achenbach professed to enjoy relaxing on his back porch
with family and friends, so when Washington, DC area Boodlers decided to meet at
a restaurant, they called it the “Boodle Porching Hour” or BPH for short. They
began meeting regularly, and becoming friends in name as well as deed. Bits and
Bytes on a server and in browsers became a Human experience.
But it always came back to the Boodle. Wedding plans were announced, and when
Boodlers moved and goodbyes were said. Some called it a virtual family. Boodlers
began spending hours in the Achenblog comments, waiting for feedback, for
emotional and intellectual connection and acknowledgement, for, perhaps, love?
They began to ignore their jobs in the Government, in the Sciences, and in the
Private Sector. eMails and phone calls went unanswered as folks caught up on
past Boodling, and considered and wrote their next digital japes.
Untold work hours were lost, nay, wasted, and the intellectual capital of a most
important part of American society along with it. The Machinery of the world
began grinding to a halt, and cracks started to form in the foundation.
So, in these raw days as capitalist Western Civilization collapses, as Global
Warming threatens to swamp our very existence, as the flames of war threaten to
engulf the middle east and the entire world with it, we realize that there WAS a
“Tipping Point” where the world’s best minds and energies could have been
harnessed and brought to bear on the world’s problems. Those that could have
made the difference chose to write Haiku about science fiction TV shows, make
racy double entendres about politics and write about history - when they could
have been making it.
But instead THEY HAD TO BOODLE.
If a future human society finds this message, and are wondering about The End of
the Golden Age of Man, remember this:

In today’s Washington Post, there’s an interesting article describing a quiet little White House program to collect and chemically test sewage taken from the public waste treatment system in Fairfax County, VA.
Post Writer Bill Turque says that the Bush Administration “is probing the mysteries of Fairfax’s sewage for a clearer picture” of illegal behavior in the suburban DC county, presumably performing chemical analysis of the waste for signs of drug usage amongst the population. A “clearer picture”, indeed.
In the light of the flaps over the Administration’s perceived attacks on American Civil Liberties, such as the Domestic Spying/Wiretap Programs, certain provisions of the Patriot Act and the summons of Google Internet Search data , it’s astonishing that the Bush Administration would publicly squat to this new low, given the dumps that Bush’s poll numbers are in lately.
While the Administration is saying that this effort is this is currently limited to testing for urinary byproducts of cocaine, what’s to stop them for testing for other things? And with this precedent set, what’s to limit the Government from testing the sewage coming right out of your house as it goes into the public sewer system under the streets?
Are we paranoid for thinking that this Administration is interested in sifting through Our Personal Wastes for Nuggets of Intelligence that would be valuable to them in the Domestic War On Terra (ahem), as long as they have a legal perch to do so?
Let’s not forget that Morality Laws (Sodomy, etc.) are on the books in some areas; the potential for use of this type of investigation for wide-ranging information gathering is more than a little disturbing.
Imagine a Bush Administration Sewage Test and Recovery Directorate (BASTaRD) working in the sewer outside your house: ”Hmm, here’s a trace of Paxil… there’s some Lithium-sign, whoa- I think they had corn *and* asparagus for dinner, ok, there’s some Ritalin… Ah, got ‘em! There’s personal lubricant here! We’re goin’ in!”
On the other hand, there is a bright side to all this; if you want to get in touch with the Bush Administration to tell them what you think, now you know how to send them a message. Gift-wrapped, if you like.

Down here in the 10th circle, it’s Lost Monday.
No work whatsoever is getting done, and no one is bothering to pretend otherwise.
Lost Monday is the first business day after the NCAA Tournament Committee releases their selections of 65 Division I Men’s College basketball teams for the tournament to determine this year’s National Championship.
At the open of business on Lost Monday, corporate internet firewall bandwidth is saturated with traffic to Yahoo and the other big sites hosting office pools, as people put on their green Bracketologist visors and start researching the “little guys” invited to the big dance. “Ok, Belmont has twenty wins, but who the hell did they beat? Monmouth and Hampton in the play-in game: Does it matter?”
Workers drink their coffee black right out of the office pot, cranking out test bracket after test bracket on the network printers, fast breaking through the cubes on their way back and forth to the coffee machine in the hopes that none of their co-workers will notice how they’re spending their time. The panicky scrambles to the supply room to find more paper or to refill empty toner cartridges before being discovered is most of the cardiovascular exercise some folks will get in an entire year. And it’s usually all for naught, as if their co-drones could help noticing the strata of discarded bracket sheets bearing the NCAA Final Four logo layering their desks like a fenced yard bearing a 50 ft. oak on a late fall day.
They may pause to catch their breath and bitch about how their alma mater didn’t make the cut, or to taunt a co-worker about theirs, but this day at the office is all about Finding a Way to Win.
The American work hours lost and the business cost of this Monday is unfathomable.
But then there’s the Infinite Lunch Thursday, the first round of the tournament.

In the always-Ouroborosian Internet Blogosphere. NewScientist.com reports (via the science Journal Nature) that a tricky quantum computer produces results despite the program designed to produce an answer never actually running to completion.
A cool trick of quantum measurement from the “Zeno’s arrow” argument that if an arrow in flight does not actually move during any given instant in time, then it does actually not move at all (one wonders if William Tell had this on his mind 700 years ago).
So; introduce the photon to the computer, measure (forcing the photon to collapse into a pure eigenstate), rinse (allowing the photon to reassume a superposition of possible states), and repeat.
The repeated kneading of the photon like the rise and punch-down of bread dough within the proximity of computer kitchen allows it to couple with the rest of the system, presumably forcing a wave-based effect on the rest of the environment as though the photon actually went through.
So, though there was actually no input to the system, the correct downstream results were recorded.
Personally, I’m very interested in applying this technology to my online bill-paying.

Hair-trigger Dick leaves the scene after a tender moment with his friend (and a towel), but orders that the incident not be reported until he can confront his wife with the shocking truth about all of those “hunting trips” with “donors”.
